Skeletons
The skeletons kiss beneath
The muddy eiderdown.
Kiss in a place of stardust
Buried deep from sun and far.
Wedding rings caked with soil
Embrace in an orthopedic
Union of spines.
After dark the skeletons
Venture outside and run
Bony fingers around the language
Written on the stone upstairs.
Sometimes when the moon is full
They feel positively pagan
And dance to obscure psychedelic
Tunes from the nineteen sixties.
The husband who had a career
As an archaeologist spends his hours
Gardening a space amongst the roots.
While the wife sits in an attic
Just beneath the surface listening
For the approach of flowers.
They plan to go shopping
When the last January sale announces
The end of the world.
And after eat fish and chips.
They haven’t had a square meal
Since moving from above.
They would both like a grandfather
Clock to tell the time of day.
A chandelier to switch on at night.
Matching raincoats and bonetight
Body suits to keep out the draught.
An interior designer to stop
Them moaning about the decor.
She would also like a gold lamé dress.
Black gloves and a tube of lipstick.
Trade in her old Kodak
For an X-ray machine.
Acquire a new pair of eyes
And a full length mirror.
He would like a telegram
When he’s a hundred years dead.
A chat with a newspaper
And a two week sabbatical
Digging up some ancient civilization.
