Sudden Light
Long hollow lane
trenched by centuries
of feet and rain
a chalk escarpment
headed by mohican hedges
wheat fields, crickets
late Spring day
to hilltop, primroses
still in flower
between the toes of trees
whose canopies race
to win the sun
oak leaves like prayer flags
sudden
outrageous sweetness
world a ball in children’s hands
bounces on laughter
for a second, light dances
with me
flees
that’s not how it truly felt
one second years ago
as much as I can say
