Teenagers - a white Canadian
and black American - shooting
a football back and forth
between the pine trunks of Michigan.
Brown polished spirals shattering
the passive green. Ducking and faking
we ran patterns knife-precise
catching one toss at the boot straps,
full stretch a one-hander,
until fatigued we sat down.
‘What’ you doin’ after summer,” I said.
‘I’m going to Vietnam. And you?”
From then I have strolled
thirty years unable to answer.
