Port-E-Chee Meadow Sort Of Revisited
The day was mildly mad
with mist and skeletal elms,
murderous with crows.
The old mill seemed to know
something of the winter man
a summer boy had contrived to become,
as its stream sighed to itself
beneath a splintered wheel
and the sky held its breath.
The distance merely hinted at hills,
in no mood to quite admit
their continuing existence.
The best part of a life had come to this.
The question of the next step
was rhetorical, and yet twilight
was already clearing its throat as if
just about to answer.
In a pub further than just miles away,
listening to a clock in another bar
tick tock ticking him off
for all the mistakes a summer boy could make,
the winter man sipped whisky,
tasted dandelion and burdock.
