River
Dragonflies crouch on the prow of the boat.
Green lane of the river purling.
Oar tip sparks with drops,
levered out catches light on the light
grained wood;
then deep again into the bottle-green liquid.
The hinged squeak of the rowlock
speaks of work to the natural world.
Fishermen throw arched lines
hooked with bait into deep water.
Up-river, down-river
show-boats
make waves on which we’re content to bob
happily.
You take off your shirt and look down
into the river.
Seeds
float
light winged creatures
on the surface circulate.
Fields are cut
short as your hair.
Breezes in the trees
chatter behind you.
I row. You steer.
Trailing your hand
as I find the rhythm,
the quiet blade’s plash
into the house of fish.
