Mountains I Have Known
Mountains I have known flaked with scree
the lower world falling away
its shapes whirling like snowflakes from
memory Lilliput, child’s play.
Crough Patrick crouching by the sea
its peak hooded with grey muslin.
Pilgrims snake past a stone-eyed saint
torchlight Lammas old longings.
Tryfan’s tall shadow echo of
voices, streams: faint music, bright strands.
Watching a kestrel’s cut-out shape
glide to the Castle-of-the-Wind.
Pinnacles dazzling above ripe
Cretan orange groves libations
of sunlight impossible snow
reaching up through blue abstractions
and that other inner mountain
I have climbed alone all my life
treading in spirit through a fog’s
hunger towards a dream of light.
