In The New Forest
It lifts through tiers of mosaic light. Russet,
amber, green. It trembles its voice on the breeze.
Vocals of ash, beech, whitebeam.
Ferns float their mist. The shade exudes us
like waterdrops. Muscular oaks mass upwards,
their triceps buttressed with shadows.
A crash - a whiplash of branches - a flash
of deer. Red letters on green. Glimpsed and gone,
suspending us in an after-shiver of leaves.
Fallow or muntjac, sika or roe, they know
no boundaries. Serene and slow, a buzzard
carves circles, high king of the unconfined blue.
Its dark shape studs the distance, a circumflex
over the forest as we leave. Steering the car
to flat-packed fields. Swept into sudden emptiness.
