1 New Work
In 1937 he wrote quickly
a novel based on babyhood
that of his wife Flossie
dedicated to the kids
he was a physician in fact
a pediatrician who wanted
to write about babies
in his accustomed manner
without too much forethought
combining Flossie’s babyhood
with material which he had
gathered over his three years
clinical work with them
which filled him up with babies
and the devil was in him
to write his new work
he gave it the title White Mule
because Floss was a mule
and white and another meaning
came from the drink White Mule
Floss was a shot of whiskey
to him that was fortuitous
her disposition cantankerous
he thought like all wives
riding her man like mad for
his own good whether
he liked it or not.
Chance was no less dependable.
