His ailments had begun
paining the retired physician
who walked slowly
in the company of a friend
and a neighbour’s dog
which was limping
The friend leant down
hoping to help
and the dog suddenly frightened
nearly bit him
The old physician
a celebrated poet
confident in gesture
took hold of the paw
in his left hand
the right being less agile
probed expertly
and found it
the source of the trouble
Feeling surely
between the toes
he removed the burr
that had been hurting it
without the slightest cringe
from the cur
The three then continued on
their walk beside the ocean
