The Calling
Inexorably, like the tide, the morning heat comes seeping in
To Mutlu, sitting in the shade, who sips a glass of cold ayran
And lays his surgeon-tailor’s tools upon
The table that his father made. Cascading
Down the dry hillside, the siren words
Of western pop take turns with Turkish arabesk,
A partnership which can’t quite drown
The never changing call to prayer
From Mutlu’s snow-white village mosque.
People will always come to him,
For dresses are necessities, and he is careful to give thanks
For this, the life that life has brought,
These tools, this cloth, this gentle work.
