All the Light Denies
Day is a thief who steals stars. With light,
the sun blocks the sky, sneaking west to lift
one lockless window and escape. Day fades
on the glass, and twilight lingers till stars shine.
Night opens the sky, and we finally see all
the light denies. At last, we can see we can see
farther through dark, deeper in darkness.

Eric Paul Shaffer lives in Hawaii and is author of five books of poetry, most recently Lahaina Noon in 2005. He received the 2002 Elliot Cades Award for Literature which is awarded annually to an Hawaii writer.
