Three Variations on the Northern Lights
i
we tilt our faces
to the long-sleeved night,
its blown silks lit with pollen
nitrogen’s violet, oxygen’s green,
electrons on a solar wind –
grace gusting through us,
wild light
ii
at lower latitudes
the aurora reddens
a saga night, blood-lit
banners on the wind,
flavines, vermilions,
Flósi’s brands
Katla
breathing on the mountains,
witching her reds
iii
tonight the gods are electric eels,
unpredictable,
rippling the sky’s bare rim
while pcs flicker in winterblack:
surfers, hot-mailers, gamers
wired to pixels
push-button light
Flósi – arsonist in Njall’s Saga
Katla – murderous cook / fire-fiend (Iceland)
Lynne Wycherley’s new collection, North Flight (Shoestring Press), due in the Autumn, charts a journey to Orkney, Shetland and Iceland.
