Say Cheese (56)
The dog lead catches her face.
Her pigtails whip the walls
as she slumps against plaster.
He smiles, adjusts his trilby
at a slight angle in the mirror;
brushes his moustache with forefinger.
Kicks me out of the way like a dog,
steps over my sister.
The door at 19 Thirlmere Avenue slams:
Dickie Valentine brylcreem boy
sings a love song on the television
in the back room over coconut-matting.
A goldfish blinks in a weedless bowl.
My sister sits in a chair head slumped
her pig-tails dangle down, ribbons loose.
Seven years old, I make her cheese on toast
with Kraft Cheese slices; I'm an expert at it.
Watching it bubble like blisters.
