We were banned from
turning into hare
cats
goats
or coughs of peat-reek.
Disallowed from circle-dancing
birth-bare
here
on Scotland’s rim
with midgies in the summer
haar in winter.
We were utterlie debarred
from riding rotten seas
in eggshell boats.
And flying was prohibited.
But still
we flew.
On smooth shafts
clamped
between chafed thighs
we wafted up into the
free
green air
as flecks of burning ash.
