I am a weather-vane woman.
I’m set on a spindle
in the middle of my life.
Facing one way, I see him mix
with white and pink, to be baby skin,
seep into milk, making it cream.
He’s golden glaze on tops of trees
the thinnest butter spread on the sea.
He marries rice with strands of saffron
fixes uplights inside dandelions.
For many years I’ve faced East
The wind has changed.
I turn the other way.
I see him crawl on neglected walls,
in papers left rolled up in a desk,
tainting covers and pages of books,
staining teeth, nicotining fingers.
In the distance he has burst out of amber,
he’s molten bronze, saturating the sun –
going down over burnt umber.
