The other thing was that I’d been in the library
all afternoon, resting my eyes on the words
‘cathedral mauve’ and ‘rose damask’,
thinking how light moves through a church
from east to west, silver at noon, gold at five;
resting my eyes on the small black letters
set deep in thin paper, and the archive box itself:
thick buff pulp, reinforced corners. The delicate
papers lay flat inside a blue folder, with samples
of fabric placed calmly at the top, without pins.
Placed there by a man in 1924 – Perkins, a man
so pure and sweetly serious, so skilled and knowing,
that my pleasure in reading about dyes and silks,
cottons and serge was such that I would rather
read about them for ever than look at them directly.
