On This Earth
For the few moments
on this earth, we become
too curious in these things:
green light, dusty plants
in blue windows, the sunny wood;
we seek a science
of objectivity, to escape:
perceive cells of green leaves
synthesizing in the genesis of summer,
the white tracery of a particle breeze
and the atomic complexity
of grass in the heat, sun
radiating in the fields,
chemical skies, cosmic weather;
and we dream, dream
of knowing the world we know
and never will know, mind
expanding through the universe
in the ecstasy of the eternal
search; and we peer, peer
into the infinite
window we can’t see through:
oh yes, we will test
for God, attaching
electrodes to the stars.
