His Wife
My husband, minus shirt and boxer shorts,
is not a sight you’d travel far to see:
those veins, his lardy skin, the astronaut’s
(garbed up) physique, with hints of manatee;
breasts bulging, pouchy sides, three folds of neck
with sprigs of hair he keeps just long enough
to reach his collar, posture slack, no check
on nails or moles, hard skin or navel fluff.
And yet I’m sure he’s screwing someone else –
here, in our house. He’s careful, but naive:
he never guesses I can smell her scents.
I can’t decide which part I don’t believe:
that she might love him, and he’d love her to,
or that I want him in the way I do.
