Grade II Listed
Faded peacock, spreading its red-brick wings,
their hundred eye-less sockets revealing only
blue skies,
as ancient floorboards, plaster, joists,
fill the air with age and smoke,
and sound the hidden crackle of demolition flames.
This building, with its Strawberry Hill appendages,
has gone by many names,
but it is now a façade only
and I wonder how it stands.
Fire is licking out its insides
and planners, developers and peasants
urge it to admit to cries of “heretic!” –
All lies!
And Tesco smirks as the demolition crews go in.
