Each clause clips like scissors,
Snips the long life’s impedimenta.
The house, of course, goes to the son.
Rather, the son to the house.
The villa, a home from home
For the favourite daughter.
No gavel here. Otherwise,
An auction-house gravity.
In turn, the Steinway,
The silver, the first editions
Claim new custodians.
No surprise
Except for the late Hockney,
Its Californian light
To dazzle an address
In Bognor Regis.
And no mention, of course, of the maverick gene,
Its bright blade glittering
From the ceiling.
