One Day (like many others)
Remember that day when everyone was tired:
We should not have gone on;
We should have stopped then.
There was a man on horse back
And he was very very angry;
Someone hadn’t done something
And someone else had suffered.
It could have been a shoe lace,
It could have been a form.
It emerged later that evening
There was something about money
And something about blood.
I don’t remember what job he did
Or even if he was actually on a horse
But he always seemed high up to us
He always seemed aggressive.
There were whispers that he killed a girl
And now he was very angry
And no matter what it was you said to him
He was about to do something nasty.
It could have been gunfire,
Or the telephone ringing,
But it broke my concentration.
What he did next or what happened
I cannot tell you with any certainty
It came out white, I remember someone
Saying ‘it shouldn’t be white it should
Be red,’ but how many times do you see a body
Do that in a lifetime to know how it operates,
To get used to it. We were so tired
You remember that day better now
We should not have gone on,
We should have stopped then.
