Last Acts
Before reaching sleep
the President who is not beautiful
takes off his mask
lays Out his words beside the bed
switches on the dream machine
so that he may not see his mother
or the orchard at Easter
or the classroom in summer
or the rocking horse
or the lips of his speech maker
so that his fathers letters remain silent
and his wife’s legs don’t do that thing
and the desk stays quiet
and nobody sends messages from Russia
and the snowman doesn’t spy
this happens each night
when the President reaches out for sleep
and switches off his words
and lays out his mask beside the bed
and newspapers begin their head lies
and between these essential last acts
the President who is not beautiful
sees his father winding the clock
making each hour safe
securing days, lives, beliefs.
