The Cat and The Condom
the used protective in the empty tin
of heinz beans and baconbungers
is something that brings you up in
sudden pause to reflect on life’s little urges
to think of what is crisp and what is turgid,
the aesthetics of the sentimental grin
the effectiveness of interpersonal mergers
and who is really our closest kith and kin.
I throw away the peeled skin
like something discarded from a verger’s
jumble sale. It’s not for the compost bin
but turns our madrigals to dirges.
cats demand nothing, consider us old fogies:
a dish of milk and they’ve no sense of sin.
what’s it to them what’s in the tin
