¡DIABLO!
I’m stoned as a raincloud;
the rich aroma of fresh roast coffee,
crash and clank of dishes
and scraping of chairs
on the red terracotta floor
echo round my weary head.
Golden sunlight glints on the café glass.
Across the street
a bleached white Spanish bank
Slogans painted on a Belfast gable
a red plastic Coca-cola sign.
Mopeds buzzing by like insects.
Over the brown coffee-haloed table
her skin is smooth as whiskey
& her eyes gleam like a star.
Passion pumping round my veins
like a baseball-hatted dealer
in a stolen car.
