Searching
Where were you
when I looked down
the great couloir, with
the broken rocks, the snow
scoured scree, the trembling stone?
When earlier I bartered
one sure step
at a time on the glacier,
where were you, when I looked
into the frozen voids
of the crevasse zone, looked
behind at the disappearing valley?
Or earlier still,
when I saw the aguilles rouge
hold the day’s last fire
from my cold bed, my hard bed,
my bed of stone comfort?
Where were you when
the summit was touched?
There, I saw you,
my constant company;
I would not let go and
we waltzed amongst angels
on the point of the needle.
