Hertford Castle
Winds and storms today, six people dead
because of walls, or roofs, collapsed,
a lorry on the A1 overturned, thus
causing carnage on its homeward journey.
I listened to the news, and wondered
what of home was left. Saw visions of the end,
all ruins, megaliths, returned
to enigmatic history, pure silence come.
Was premature. Beyond apocalypse,
once having slept allotted hours,
we’ll wake, responsibilities intact,
wind dropped, to meet a fragile dawn,
will need our coats and scarves tomorrow
going out to see if Hertford Castle stands.
