This piece of writing was born with bow legs.
It doesn’t rhyme. It isn’t a poem
(well, not by accepted standards)
It can’t dance across the page.
It doesn’t thrill. It doesn’t flow.
The words don’t tiptoe from the pen.
It stops. It starts. It falls over.
It stumbles in
clumsy places
It wears man-made boots.
It can sometimes imitate Larkin.
It does Heaney in fits and starts -
A follower. Its voice is shrill.
It doesn’t know style. If poems were clothes,
It’d be a tweed jacket.
It stands alone.
It repeats itself. It doesn’t rhyme.
It has few friends. There are no fans.
It dreams of verse. The odd line scans.
