Martin Anderson
The Inheritance
Some ancestor ghost
in me must
have been frustrated
by ankles widening
under hems longing
to slip his
large hand up
smooth calves and
feel them plumping
tense His passion
never died but
haunted him Now
I carefully unravel
it like a
bodice against the
summer and see
from its long
confinement how white
the skin is and
as I run
my hand along
it hear the
deep thump of
anguish and pain
like the heart’s
climbing the stairs
