Small Buffalo Herd, Ionia, New York
The way I heard it,
originally bought to raise
as meat for mink
at the fur-farm
but didn’t pan out
now confined to
a sloping, grassy field
double heavy-duty fencing
“they walk right through light stuff”
shaggy brown humps
hooves paw away tops
of sandy hillocks
to lay down like stones
part of the earth
