Winter-Garden I
I lie stretched out beneath the ice
In a skin of transparent light.
The fish bump into it, the sun
Stands over it. I feel the hedge-
King the wren’s sharp songs. Black crashing
Windy night reigns longer.
Roaring and breaking of ice. The sea
Lies heavy on me and the land.
And as she read “Black crashing
Windy night” / black
Crashing windy night announced
Its presence / by suddenly
Howling / rattling the
Windows / lighting the city-
Skyline with crackling flashes / followed
By claps of thunder / as if
In cosmic approval / then
Great swirls of snow. For a second
The lights go out / to a tremendous
Bang they flicker back on. Without
A pause / without as much as
Looking up / she raises her right
Hand in unsurprised – not
Unamused – acknowledgement / and
