Interlaken
From the airport, we drove
through forests dense as bar codes,
while nothing seemed to stir
in the turquoise mirror-lakes
gawked at through the freckled glass
of the coach windows.
Interlaken; nuzzled between warm stretches
of calm water, overlooked by paragliders
stepping off peaks bobble-hatted with snow,
spiralling down to closely-trimmed parks
and Swiss army knife kiosks.
On a forest green bench
we sat and read yesterdays news in the heat,
nodding affably to dog-walkers and those
easing through the after-effects of Sunday dinner.
Tomorrow, we shall be complaining about
today’s news (twenty four hours
before they disregard it), through news updates
on the drive home in the rain
and in-between washing up and that
unfinished report.
