The Sixteen Point Standard
Snow fell like bleached punctuation;
drifting in grammatically incorrect paragraphs,
the day after you’d gone.
On the way home from work,
I huddled to the reality of the seatbelt,
work-worn as the slush in the gutters,
and thought about the last moments we’d spent:
kissing the air either side
of your well-buffed cheeks,
as you turned for the door.
Something in your eyes -
as you turned from flicking the latch,
made me search through the gaze
to the oozing honeycomb
of your deepest desires;
taunting me with the incessancy
of autumn leaves.
Your stress-grooved forehead
was so-soon dune-smooth
as I laid you, waist-deep
in remorse, brimful of
uncharted future-thoughts, on the bed.
Now all sixteen points must link -
like a constellation of guilt in my palm,
to connect your blushing bruises to my disputed blame.
