Bryan Teague
The Dipper
Lover of fast-flowing upland reaches,
You fly fast and low over white water,
Belying your short-tailed, dumpy figure,
To your look-out on a granite boulder.
Hopping nimbly from rock to rock you pause
To bob and curtsy to a lone rambler
Enjoying your lush solitariness,
Your clear metallic clicks and warbling song.
You plunge suddenly into the current,
Swimming underwater before walking
On the bottom, to emerge with a snail.
Raising it aloft in triumph, you dash
It against a rock until its shell cracks.
Dressed in your blackish-grey with white gorget
And chestnut sash, you jerk your chocolate head,
Winking a white eye with a final bow.
