Don't Believe the Wife
She, soon-to-become-his ex,
complained: But for his manners in bed
their fractured marriage could be healed.
His lack of lust for sex
excused her appetite for giving head
behind his back. Accepting guilt, he appealed
in vain, of course. He left.
But in the New Year risked a date
with a woman never before met by him.
She smiled; she laughed him into bed
and he, unbelieving of his fate,
watched her welcome as she let him in
and in and in. They lost count.
Over breakfast such tenderness she gave
that he left her wanting more.
At night he became her mount.
‘Do I make you happy?’ he gasped, looking grave.
‘Darling,’ she sighed, ‘You make me soar!’
These poems are from Jim Greenhalf’s forthcoming book, The Unlikelihood of Intimacy in the Next Six Hours. His first major collection, The Dog’s Not Laughing, was published by Redbeck last year. Following the Seine came out this year.
