A cool breeze fans the lily-leaves,
the petals fold coyly over
and in.
The pillow cools.
On the lake, in the dark
by the peach orchard,
a boat creaks. Its
oarsman’s old.
The wild geese, they say,
will return
in autumn
to nest again
by the pricking reeds
of the River Chen.
