Peter Monacell
Liminal
Peter treads a bed of shells and fails
to sink. He hums for the hollowed-out conchs;
halved oyster hulls click click click at his feet.
The tide writhes with unburdened snails
lugging pale muscles out of the heat.
Peter pauses, slaked by the morning works.
He wipes from his fingers the ink expelled
by the octopi as he pried out their beaks.
Freedom to the calcified, he thinks
atop the wreckage, a monument erected
from houses and mouths dredged up in his net
then detested and cracked and scraped clean.
Tomorrow the sea stars must be ejected.
He will place them, trembling, near the ocean.
