Prayer For A Young Poet
Because the sea’s blue is a borrowed blue
it is better.
Birds have slept all night in his black skull
and he needs to let them go.
Have pity on this young man.
Grant him the cataract and the canyon.
Grant him the berry and the shining leaf.
Give him the lightning in the grain of sand.
Give him the children that come down to the water’s edge to shout
and the mothers and the grandmothers of the children
and the longlegged girls,
for in the evening as he turns to sleep
he turns alone beneath a barren cloth
and lays a massive stone across his heart.
