Water
I
The way it moves among us
but is not our element
coming in between
one side of a field, of a town
and the other, turning us
towards bridges, our two lives
crossing;
or overflowing
its banks, venturing
into another world, encountering
the inconceivable - traffic cones,
bird tables, lifting them
from their surroundings,
carrying them
down the high street
like mysterious trophies.
II
Changing your life,
changing history
is the simplest of movements
it is picking up a phone,
it is turning your horse around,
it is washing your hands
in front of the crowd
the water through your fingers
as quiet, as ordinary
as the trickle of a spring
at the source of a great river.
