Childish Fascination
I see you,
bending over like a
little child,
a pile of stones grasped in
your upturned hands.
Some slipping through
your clasped fingers
onto the ground;
as you walk to the water’s edge.
Your childish
fascination with
throwing stones into the water
is endearing,
as you listen for the splash
and watch the ring of ripples form;
disturbing the stillness
of the broad.
Now and agin, a cry
for approval:
‘Did you see that?’
as you manage a seven-skim-stone.
Arms thrown up above your head,
in a gesture of celebration.
Childish fascination.
‘Did you see that one?’
Pride evident in your face,
which is lit up
like the reflections of the sun
on the water.
I see you, and
I smile, because
I adore you.
