Journey
Between from and to
Suffolk is rushing backwards on
silvery tracks, too fast for names
or anything close at hand
to catch, and I’m as near weightless
as I’ll ever be, stretched in this long thin line
between then and when.
Between here and somewhere
the white surge of Orwell Bridge lifts
for take-off, overflies
unmarked mudflats light and polished as jet -
no wonder I’m light-headed -
and a field unrolls like a carpet, harrow-patterned,
with its red dot of tractor, seven white gulls
between sometime and then,
when a man crumbled earth in his hand,
watched a ploughman turn for the last time
and went off, whistling.
On the brown field the gulls are so bright
they’re embossed, cameos
I could wear on a string round my neck,
light as breath, near my heart.
