Introduction to Maya Sarishvili

In 2008, Maya Sarishvili won the SABA Prize for Poetry, Georgia’s top literature award, for her collection, Microscope. She is the author of one other poetry collection, Covering Reality (2001), as well as three radio plays. She lives in Tbilisi, Georgia where she works as a third-grade teacher and is mother to four children, ages 6 to 13. Her work is forthcoming or has appeared in Guernica, Versal, Nashville Review, Los Angeles Review, Bitter Oleander, and others. Georgian poet Zviad Ratiani explains her poetry best: ‘Her poems are like Rilke’s Duino Elegies: somehow self-sufficient, and somehow something is always happening inside them. Whenever I touch them, when I read them over and over again, something else is happening inside me each time. Her poems are naked, containing so much naked feeling and sense, but on the other hand, so much intelligence.’
