Snow Geese
From the Gulf of Mexico
snow geese rise.
Black tipped wings, sky bound
clamouring with the downward beat
of winged applause.
North to Fargo,
coasting overhead in straggling lines,
with outstretched necks
flock memories recalling frozen lands.
Alphabet flights, in V, U, Js and Ws
heading for ice chilled land,
blue veined with melt water.
Open tundra, tussock sedge
and granite itched from winter sleep.
Across prairies, sorties of birds,
furl in roving waves
awash with silver sequins
mirrored by the sun.
Over conifer forests, past Winnipeg
long skeins vacillate like smoke, drifting ash,
fading ambers over Hudson bay
to Baffin island in tangerine horizons
of sunset flight.
The low thrum of beating wings
homecoming to shadows
rolled like turbulence on ice.
Whole flocks circling the roost,
their ponds, their rest.
