On Leaving the Footpath
The metal of the footpath is
narrow & confined, its walk
short & crooked round
the hideous hangers. But
pausing for an hour or two
resting on corn stubble, that
glossy yielded ripeness
really does take on its curved
quality of extension from us as we
push it out in a wide
hillock-shaped surface, catching
the sun on its skin with the
same aplomb of intention there is
in the cup of a radio telescope. Alive
we hold it all, the signals
separately received are
poised in balance by the achieved
leap we are & the fence of
the footpath is oh a
hundred yards away, warded off
with the same intuited use of magic
or selection that the
corn too has used to give itself
significance & its own chance of survival.
