For Jeanette Perlman (1889-1984)
It is such &
such hard work
stark aching so
dismaying even last
light thru the vacancy a
boding far a jar at heart
the vibrancy at margins
brimming starlight thru
one aniline vase it
seems pure ec-
centricity that
wavers to its
own repute
clear premise
of a foregone
pulse dispersing
heavy on whose
hands withstand
the toiling after
to perfect a kindly
gravity a witnessed
stateliness redounds
to dawns gone venturing
in crystal on her sill that
intercedes the sun
obliquely held the
flesh so loose on
hands her face
from all hard
questioning
diffused on
instant that
confers to
eyes sight’s
dowry the
passage thru
so universed
in sorrow cooled
to bluing dreamed
full flowering futurity
& so her life was true
regard so hard to reach
