Long Distance Migrants
(for Doris, leaving Cornwall for South Africa)
Beneath cornfields, Roman roads
along which farmers, merchants and monks strode,
families walked to harvest festivals,
young girls strolled with their beaux, or
twirled around midsummer maypoles.
Insects breed early, the Sahara expands,
dolphins sighted just offshore, whales lose track,
polar bears swim further, glaciers thin,
spotted flycatchers are in decline, there are fewer turtle doves -
and where have all the tree sparrows gone?
More silver moths fly in,
Adonis blues colonise the Cotswolds,
dormice return to unploughed pastures,
choughs to Cornwall.
From North Africa, the Mediterranean,
clouded yellow butterflies line the cliffs. And
Doris wings out on southerlies.
