We’re not much of an audience for her.
Jesus loves me, this I know
Because the Bible tells me so.
My father who’s a dour medical man
and me who thought singing was cissy
ever since primary school when Clive Major
went: Little girls go la! la! la!
Jesus loves me, this I know.
I’ve never been to church with my father.
He stays home and does his Sunday chores.
And I’ve never heard him sing
though they say he can sing a rude song
with Randall Lunt and Johnny Leeper.
Jesus loves me, this I know.
She has to drink her tea through a pipette
but it still spills all over the place.
Her old lady’s Adam’s apple wobbles
like a metronome. My father’s got such strong
medical hands. He could stop it.
