Accountant
A snowflake falls on his naked eye
but he doesn’t blink, transfixed on
something in the middle distance.
The snow’s reach is further than his own.
Back home it covers statues of the cenotaph
falls on the lions’ faces and the bronze
infantrymen. Streetlamps
bowed like them seem beset
with clouds of dying moths. The cost
of snow sits on a snow-white page
in Whitehall. The road salt, workers delayed,
railway men paid overtime to break
ice from the points. The black Quink
dries, smells like sterile bandages
and leaves little groups of numerals
to count for companies of men.
