Defying Hilda
I've never trodden the cobbles
nor sunk a pint in the snug.
Never lodged in some unseen upstairs room
at number 13, nor read the sports pages
while at stool in the cludgie, Izal ready.
And I've never worn a hairnet or curlers,
ordered a milk stout, or tucked into
a plate of hotpot, nor will I ever.
But if a lifetime of regular visits
to the street that Mussolini built,
that Dickens filled with types in human form,
has taught me owt, it's taught me this:
this would never, ever, have happened
in Hilda Ogden's day.
