The Minnack Again
Matinee performance of a musical, with a cast who try
to entertain this middle-aged man and his family.
We sit on the hard seats and applaud, while the sea
threatens. Yes, I have been here before:
Nineteen years old, they let me walk around
the empty theatre. I stood on the stage listening;
the sea was noisier then. In the evening
“The Tempest” and a coup de theatre;
A single spotlight picked out Caliban
crawling up the rocks from the sea.
I slept in a farmhouse, ate breakfast in the sun
with all the sea and all my life before me:
Actor, writer, lover,
King of all the world.
The performance ends, we stretch our stiff legs.
We sat too close to the loudspeakers,
and it will take hours to get out of the car park.
On Caliban’s rocks, a group of children are quietly fishing.
