Gordon Scapens
His Master's Voice
A man leaves the church,
operates his mobile phone.
Immediately it rings.
He talks agitatedly,
gestures wildly,
then listens in silence.
Looking at the sky
there’s an attempt to smile.
It doesn’t reach his face.
He returns to church,
makes a show of ten pounds
in the offertory box.
A new sting to learn.
There are some people
you just don’t argue with.
